How To Make Sure You Get Effective SAT Writing Practice

SAT writing practice is just one of the necessary practice routines you will have to go through if you are to improve your performance in a College Board SAT test. The SAT test is made up of three separate disciplines, each of which is allocated 800 points. The writing section is further divided into multiple choice and a short essay. It is obviously the essay section which will benefit most from writing practice, but any work which involves stimulation of the intellect will confer an all round benefit.

Anyone can practice writing, but it is not so easy to know whether you are making progress or not unless you have access to judges who can mark your work as they would in a real SAT test. The subjects on which you are asked to write during a SAT test are always as general as possible, so as to avoid a situation where some students will be at a disadvantage through a lack of knowledge of any given subject matter. You have 25 minutes to produce your writing, so if you are not a quick writer, try to set a kitchen timer and force yourself to work at greater speed.

Since 2005, there has been more of an emphasis on multiple choice questions. This is a response by the College Board to allegations of bias. There had been research carried out in California which proved that some of the multiple choice questions in the exam mitigated against minorities, because the subject matter was far better understood by someone from mainstream America. This was corrected by the Board. At the same time, they introduced more multiple choice questions in the writing section to overcome the subjective nature of judging writing.

The multiple choice questions are obviously harder to practice for than the short essay, but getting hold of a good book on grammar will be a help. Once you have learned more about how sentences should be constructed, you can vastly improve your chances by joining an online interactive learning group where you can get feedback. It is a general increasing of your knowledge of grammar which will improve your performance, as multiple choice is mainly about eliminating answers you know are wrong.

Another step you may be able to take is to form a study group with other local people who are in the same, or a similar, situation. Grammar and sentence structure are not the easiest of subjects to fit in to a group situation, but it is possible. You can improve your SAT writing practice as you learn together, especially if you can get some occasional input from a professional. If you can join an online group so you have access to multiple choice questions similar to the ones in the SAT test, so much the better. Working on improving your sentence structure will be your most useful SAT writing practice.
