How The SAT Test Times Are Scheduled, And How Best To Prepare
SAT test times are rigidly set by the College Board, as part of their world leading SAT test program. The day used for SAT testing is the first Saturday of the month, in seven different months of the year. One of the months, the first one in spring, alternates between March and April, while the others are constant. This spring month is not available to students fro overseas. If there are religious reasons why a student does not want to sit the test on a Saturday, they can ask to have it moved to a Sunday, but they have no automatic entitlement to this.
Having the SAT test schedules set as rigidly as they are allows for the student to put in a structured program of preparation, for the test which will have a profound effect on their future. Although the days on which the tests take place are strictly laid down, there is plenty of flexibility in which test is taken when. The test consists of three distinct sections, one for math, one for critical reading, and one for writing. Each of the three sections carry equal weight, with 800 points awarded for each.
The SAT test dates are always set for Saturdays, on the first Saturday in each of seven different months. The summer months are missed out, and the first spring date is flexible. It alternates between March and April. All of these dates are available to students within the USA, but foreign students cannot use the first spring date. It is possible to take extra parts of the test, but the results will be withheld until these have been paid for.
The math part of the SAT test can be scored objectively, although a large part of this is multiple choice based. This does allow for some possibility of a student making lucky guesses, and achieving a higher mark than their ability would warrant. The test is large and comprehensive enough for any anomaly to even itself out, so the test results will be an accurate reflection of a student's ability. The organizers of the test even suggest that educated estimates are better than exact calculations.
The critical reading and writing parts of the test must, by their very nature, be more subjective. While some parts of the assessment are objective, such as spelling, most of the marking will be done by judges making their own individual assessment. To reduce any possibility of a student being given an unreasonably low mark, multiple judges are used. It is best to bear this in mind as you decide which parts of the test to spend the most time on during your preparation. Also, be aware of the order in which the disciplines will be tackled, and the SAT test times.
